The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has jumped in the past two weeks in Madagascar. The Alaotra Mangoro region is now one of the areas that are subject to partial lockdown. Measures have been stepped up in Vohimana protected area for the NGO L’Homme et l’Environnement team.
This health crisis is critical for eco-tourism activities. Without guests and visitors, the guides of the protected area have no source of income. The association l’Homme et l’Environnement has decided to hire two of them not only to face this crisis, but also to strengthen the monitoring of Indri lemurs and to identify the few individuals isolated outside the reserve. Once spotted, new rescue operations and reintroduction in Vohimana protected area will be conducted.
